On his birthday, January 15th we salute Alpha Boys School past student, former professional drummer and long time selector for the iconic Jah Love Sound System.
Albert Russell Johnson attended Alpha Boys School around the same time as Leroy Smart and Johnny Osbourne. He left Alpha a talented drummer and recording artist. In addition to recording drums on Fredlocks' timeless anthem, Black Star Liner, he recorded his own work.
But it was his experience selecting on Sister Ignatius' Mutt & Jeff Sound System that determined his path. If Alpha determined his path, it was his role selecting for Brigadier Jerry and Jah Love Sound System that made his career. Brigadier Jerry and Ilawi's parnership lasted from the early 70s into the early 80s.
