Sister of Mercy, Alpha girl, sound system operator, band manager extraordinaire... Sister Ignatius was born on this day, Nov 18, in 1921. We are grateful to share music recordings and radio interviews featuring one of the most significant contributors to Jamaican music.
Marie Davies attended Alpha Academy before joining the Sisters of Mercy in 1938 at the age of 17, taking the name Sister Ignatius. 'Iggy' became the band manager at Alpha Boys School where she also introduced sound system performance techniques. Her respect for, and approach to, music education was ahead of its time.
